Have you ever received a gum cake? Just me?

This post is my whole Ozempic journey so it's a little long but I know you're nosey for the details (if you're at all like me) so happy snooping! Let me start by saying while I am so normal and just your average, tired 40-year-old wife and mom trying to lose weight, I am also very not normal. I have not had sugar in three years. Before you throw me a party about it, I’m an addict. I’ve been sober 10 years and after my wine addiction, I carried around a massive bag of M&Ms, or chocolate covered almonds, or bark thins, or some kind of chooclate bars. Plural.

All day.

Everyday.

I had a bag of share size m&ms with me. For years.

What a winner.

Seen here: what I always had in my purse.
Seen here: what I always had in my purse.

But I kicked that addiction too. For my birthday a couple years ago, my sweet mother in law gave me a cake made of various flavors of chewing gum stacked and wrapped in ribbon, because that’s what I turn to when everyone else has cookies. Gum.

And I ran a half marathon. (You can throw me a party about that one that was hard AF.)

Still, after all that, your girl was stuck at 180 pounds.

Nothing worked. Over the years I’ve also tried keto, I was a vegetarian, and I used the Optavia system for a few years. It worked the best. It’s an MLM with prepackaged snacks and meals, but after a while I just felt like the foods were too processed and high in sugar, soy and chemicals.

With my history, plus a geriatric pregnancy and the unreal amount of stress from adopting four kids and then getting pregnant and suddenly having 5 new kids in under a year, my system was wacked. Especially my midsection which you can see in my before and after. And yes, I was postpartum but that's exactly how I looked before the baby. I always held that weight in my middle.

Even with zero sugar, having a trainer, running a half marathon, tried weights, various supplements and strategies and nothing. Nada. I DID do a lot of hard work myself, it just didn’t produce results.

I was ready for a change. Enter: Semi glutides (generic ozempic.)

I found a glp1 company I trusted, which is important because there is NO regulation for these online companies. If you see a deal for $99 RUN AWAY. They could be just sending you watered down b12!

I know the owner of my provider, Spry, Sara. She and her brother own the company together and they just went nationwide. I can text my nurse anytime and talk to a real human asap with any questions I have. The customer service is unmatched.

Once you decide you want to start, you meet with a doctor via zoom. They ask about your medical history and goals and get your prescription filled. Then the meds are shipped to you on dry ice.

Yes, I inject myself with a needle. It’s not a big deal at all. You get used to it, I promise.

I started in late July 2024 and lost 35 almost effortlessly, because I already had good habits. I am maintaining now around 145. (I am 5’6’.) I wanted to get to 140 but I almost felt like I was starting to look too thin. Too thin! Can you imagine?!

Warning: If you don’t have good eating habits and you don’t change, if you eat a lot of greasy or sugary food or eat late at night, you will feel horrible. You will have cramps and nausea, maybe constipation, diarrhea, headaches. This is not an easy button, so that’s why so many people complain of feeling terrible on it. But that won’t be you because you want to finally change your life, right? Right.

My side effects: There was nausea on the day of the shot and after. People often get diarrhea or constipation if they don’t drink enough water. I haven’t had that, and I don’t even drink that much water. I also didn’t work out at all until recently. But, like I said, I did have a decent diet to start with.

The peptide makes you feel full quickly because it slows down digestion. So when on a full dose, I was only able to eat about half the amount I was eating before. I focused on eating protein even if I wasn’t hungry. Most of the time I was not hungry.

Bonus: I do think semi glutides help with brain fog. It's like it clams your brain. It curbs your desire to binge, and I’ve heard multiple people say that includes the desire for alcohol, desserts and even online shopping. You experience less of the crazy spikes and swings. It’s definitely helped my mood because I felt like my old self again! But I also think it can make you exhausted (and that can feel like depression) if you let yourself get dehydrated, which is easy to do.

Banging before and afters, but Kels, will you stay on it forever?!

Yes, probably.

I am also on allergy meds that I’ve taken every day for twenty years because I live in Oklahoma. Should I stop those? People take meds for blood pressure, cholesterol, antidepressants, etc. their whole lives, but can’t take a peptide forever? (A peptide that fixes most of those other health issues?! Make that make sense.)

What no one talks about: As soon as I tapered off, I started gaining weight again.

My hunger came back and I kind of wasn't paying attention. But I didn't want to go all they way back on. So now I'm on Now I take a very low dose every 2-3 weeks. I pay attention to what I'm eating, when, and how much. I feel no side effects and my hunger is more steady. You have to pay attention to portion sizes, you don't need to eat as much as your crazy hormones and poor blood sugar are telling you! The low dose is what helps regulate blood sugars (which it's not your fault they're crazy when the US standard diet literally has sugar in everything! Pasta sauce, salty crackers, savory chips, freaking cheese!) I’m also weighing myself and paying attention now, versus pretending my scale doesn’t exist like I did before.

No, it's not cheap.

Industry standard cost is $299/month and normally isn’t covered by insurance. If you really want it, you could consider saving up. Also consider what you'll save on doordash and sugary coffees and other bad habits that will improve. Yes, it is expensive but remember this is for a few months to a year and it will completely change your life. We’ve all seen it, the gal at church or the chick at work who loses weight and suddenly she has more confidence. Cuter wardrobe. More social media posts.
